Clean Water Program

Zhenlin Zhang joined SFEI as a water quality modeler who is working on applying and developing numerical models to understand factors controlling nutrients and phytoplankton dynamics in San Francisco Bay. She received her PhD from the School of Earth and Environment at the University of Western Australia in 2011, where her research focused on wave- and current-driven circulations and water chemistry in shallow-water fringing coral reef systems. She further gained postdoc research experience from the same university but focused on modelling the impact of global events on the thermodynamics in coastal systems and upwelling-driven phytoplankton blooms along continental shelves. She is passionate about applying her expertise of coupled hydrodynamic and biogeochemical modelling to investigating water quality issues in San Francisco bay.
